The success of VfB Stuttgart has many faces, with some being more present than others. The strikers Serhou Guirassy and Deniz Undav in particular are mentioned again and again, as are winger Chris Führich, defense chief Waldemar Anton and of course coach Sebastian Hoeneß.
They all played a big part in the fact that long-time relegation candidate Stuttgart is currently third in the Bundesliga and will most likely play in the Champions League next season.
National coach Julian Nagelsmann is also relying on a big Stuttgart block for the DFB team’s important tests before the upcoming European Championship at home: With Führich, Undav, Anton and left-back Maxi Mittelstädt, the Swabians have the largest group of players in the current DFB squad, ahead of FC Bayern.
However, one Stuttgart manager is often overlooked in the reporting on VfB: goalkeeper Alexander Nübel. The keeper, who is on loan from FC Bayern, is an important source of support for his team and is also one of the best in his field in the league.
Nübel has already kept a clean sheet eight times, only Lukas Hradecky from league leaders Bayer Leverkusen is better with twelve games without conceding a goal. The Stuttgart goalkeeper’s achievements have not gone unnoticed abroad.

The Portuguese radio station TSF now writes that Sporting Lisbon, one of Portugal’s biggest clubs, is said to be interested in Nübel. It is above all the footballing qualities that coach Rúben Amorim values in the 27-year-old. The club has given priority to finding a new number one, TSF claims to have learned. The contract of regular goalkeeper Antonio Adán expires at the end of the season.
In addition to good saves, goalkeepers in modern football are increasingly involved in their team’s build-up play. Accordingly, those who can play well are in demand. Alexander Nübel falls into this category.

This is also why VfB are reluctant to let the goalkeeper go. “He’s a great guy. Of course we want to continue with him. He’s become a crowd favorite within a very short time,” said VfB CEO Alexander Wehrle recently in the “Sport1” one-two.
However, the loan deal that Stuttgart entered into with Nübel with FC Bayern expires at the end of the season. “First of all, he and Bayern Munich have to clarify the issue. They have to be clear with him, then we can talk to Nübel. Unfortunately, we have to follow this sequence of steps,” said Wehrle.

Nübel still has a contract in Munich until 2025. Because Manuel Neuer is expected to be in the Bayern goal again next season, Sky says an extension at FCB and another loan to VfB Stuttgart are currently in the cards.
Judging by the results, FC Bayern has recently gotten back on track – and how: 3-0 against Lazio Rome, 8-1 against Mainz and 5-2 in Darmstadt. If the gap to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga wasn’t so big, it could be read as an announcement to their title rivals.
