UD Almería’s Gonzalo Melero Sanctioned Four Games for Post-Match Comments

The Competition Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation has decided to sanction the UD Almería footballer, Gonzalo Melero, with four games for his statements in the mixed zone of the Bernabéu after Real Madrid-Almería. The Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) reported the player to this disciplinary committee after his words in the post-match and, subsequently, an extraordinary file was opened where he was exposed to a sanction of between four to twelve games and a fine of 601 euros to 3,005.06 euros, according to article 106 of the Disciplinary Code relating to “Declarations through any means about the members of the arbitration group or members of the regulatory guarantee bodies“.

The Committee’s reasons

Specifically, the CTA argued, verbatim, that “This player answers the journalist’s question: What feeling are you leaving with because there have been many controversial decisions? with the following phrases: “Well, the feeling that the game has been stolen from us, that clearly. I don’t think more could have been done from the outside to get them into the game. The penalty, the goal with the hand that makes the gesture, the goal disallowed due to a struggle… There is no where to take it. There are already several this year. If you don’t complain, they don’t help you, that’s how it is. We have never said anything, but I think that today has already crossed all limits. It’s a real blast, I mean, it’s the feeling after the effort, after the situation we’re in, to do it all, after having the first goal scored as they have given you, to score again and have it scored for you. cancel again.”

The club has not yet made the sanction official, although they have already echoed the news. So much so that Pepe Mel himself was in charge of communicating this to Gonzalo Melero at the end of the training, while he was signing autographs for the boys and girls of the Holy Week Campus of the UD Almería. MARCA has caught the moment in which the Madrid coach addresses Melero, making a gesture with his four-fingered hand, in reference to the four-match suspension (the lowest of the sanctions in the established scale).

The RFEF already informed both the club and the player in mid-January the opening of the file and from that moment deadlines were established for the presentation of allegations. Now, once the sanction is known, there is an appeal before the Appeals Committee to exhaust the federal route. If the latter upheld the decision, the club could appeal to the TAD, through administrative channels. And finally, through the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE), who has already demonstrated the defense of the Madrid player until the last resort, the case could be brought before ordinary justice. AFE assured at the time that “If he is sanctioned, his right to freedom of expression after having expressed his opinion would be violated.“.

We will see what steps both the club and the player are willing to take, taking into account that there are no ambitious objectives in this final stretch of the season with the team virtually relegated.
