Tristan da Silva: The Rising German Basketball Star Making Waves in College and Eyeing the NBA

Ever since the German basketball players’ sensational World Cup coup, the NBA stars around Dennis Schröder and Franz Wagner have been on everyone’s lips. But far from home, the next German is making his way into the headlines, at least in the American ones.

We’re talking about Tristan da Silva, who is currently playing well in college for the Colorado Buffaloes – and can now even dream of a big run during March Madness. After defeating Boise State during the week, the 22-year-old and his team qualified for the top 64 of the legendary college tournament.

The Munich native also played really well and can show his skills on the big March Madness stage against the Florida Gators in the first round of the tournament on Friday evening at 9:30 p.m. German time.

“If he delivers like that, who will stop us?”

“If he kills, who’s going to stop us,” his teammate Eddie Lampkin Jr. raved about da Silva after the game against Boise State had put up a strong 20 points in the 60:53 victory. Da Silva has always been “a machine”.

The local newspaper The Denver Post has also praised the 2.06 meter tall forward and sees parallels in his development to a big NBA star: “He plays like the young Kevin Durant.”

Da Silva brings the complete package

Da Silva is not only limited to the offensive end of the court, but shows the perfect qualities of a versatile “two-way” player who can control the game on both ends of the court. “He’s so hard to defend and on the other hand it’s so hard to score against him,” said Buffs teammate Cody Williams.

The match winner himself was modest afterwards: “Eddie (Lampkin Jr., teammate, editor’s note) told me before the game that it could be our last. That’s why I just tried everything to make sure we could do it today.”

Da Silva is considered a safe pick in the NBA draft

The recipe for success of the 100 kilogram da Silva? “I try to beat opponents with my speed and basketball IQ, get into the right positions and use my length.”

This certainly seems to be working really well this season, which is his fourth and last in college. So good that the little brother of Barca star Oscar da Silva is currently being traded by experts as a late first-round pick or early second-round pick in the upcoming NBA draft.

Unlike his brother Oscar, who was only removed from the DBB squad during the last squad reduction before Germany’s World Cup triumph, Tristan’s dream of the NBA could work out.

The Munich player was not only convincing in the decisive game for a place in the main round of the March Madness tournament; his stats also speak for themselves in the regular season.

With 15.8 points with a strong three-point shooting rate of 37.7 percent, 5.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals on average, he has put himself on the radar of NBA scouts. But right now the focus is clearly on March Madness.
