Tragic Death of Cyclist Jonas Bresseleers Mourned in Belgian Cycling Community

Last night it was announced that cyclist Jonas Bresseleers (24) from Brasschaat died in an accident in Meer (Hoogstraten). Two years ago, the promising rider rode for the Balense Acrog-Tormans, the team of chairman Jef Robert. He also reacted emotionally to the news of the death of the 24-year-old cyclist.

“The first messages trickled in last night,” says Robert. “And I soon received confirmation of the tragic news. Jonas was a quiet, good boy, but someone who was never afraid to do work for others. That ensured that he was a good fit in the group. When we decided to stop our promises, he went to the Dijlespurters Mechelen.”

Jonas was very good friends with Stef Loos, the young rider from Dessel who also died way too early during a cycling race at the age of 19. “The two indeed got along very well. Both were part of the strong class that also included Remco Evenepoel. Stef died on March 18, 2019. It is difficult to understand that they are reunited almost exactly five years later. Heaven already has a peloton of young cyclists. Which once again points to the dangers of the otherwise beautiful sport.”

Minute of silence

The 60th edition of the Zuidkempense Pijl-GP Wilfried Peeters will take place in Mol on Sunday. There too, the death of the rider from Brasschaat is commemorated. “Normally Jonas was also at the start on Sunday,” said Robert, who is co-organizer of the Mole cycling race. “We will certainly commemorate him before the race. There will be a minute’s silence. And we will certainly support his teammates at the Dijlespurters as well.”
