On paper, the man to beat is the Ethiopian Fentahun Hunegnaw, who in 2019 took fifth place in the marathon of Amsterdam with an excellent 2:06:04 which puts him in line for a new record on the course. His time clearly distances him from his closest challengers, the Kenyan Cosmas Birech who achieved his personal best of 2:08: 03 right on the streets of Rome when he climbed to the top step of the podium in 2018. One step away are the Ethiopians Dechasa Alemu Moreda and Derara Hurisa, who respectively signed a record of 2:08:07 in Hamburg in 2022 and 2:08 :09 in Mumbai in 2020.
