Tovar agrees with the Rockies for seven years and more than 60 million

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona — After being named a finalist for a Gold Glove as a rookie in 2023, the Venezuelan shortstop Ezequiel Tovar has agreed to a seven-year extension with the Rockies, which also includes a club option for 2031, according to an MLB source.

The deal is worth US$63.5 million and Tovar could earn a total of US$84 million if the option is exercised, according to El Extrabase, which was the first to reveal the agreement. The club confirmed that an agreement had been reached, although it did not disclose the details or make it official because a physical test has not yet been carried out.

Tovar, 22, appeared in 153 games last year and slashed .253/.287/.408 with 15 home runs and 73 RBIs. His 37 doubles tied Hall of Famer Todd Helton (1998) for the most by a rookie in Colorado team history.

The native of Maracay also finished with 11 stolen bases, to become the second Venezuelan rookie in history with 15 or more home runs and 10 or more stolen bases. Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves hit 26 home runs and stole 16 bases in 2018.

Tovar — who on September 23, 2022 became the youngest player to debut with the Rockies (21 years, 53 days) and last season was the youngest in team history to start on Opening Day (21 years, 240 days) — is considered a leader in an infield that also includes Brendan Rodgers, who won a Gold Glove in 2022, at second base and Ryan McMahon, a three-time finalist for that award, at third base.
