Kroos: “We are currently European champions”

Toni Kroos talks about his return to the DFB. He classifies the euphoria after the France victory and praises one aspect of Julian Nagelsmann.

Toni Kroos’ new start at the DFB was a success. After the 2-0 win in France, he made it clear that it would be “wrong to put on the brakes” and instead allow euphoria. “It’s what football Germany and the team have been longing for – a sense of success,” he explained in his podcast Simply Luppen. There is currently “a bit of a lot” of euphoria, but: “These are problems that we didn’t have before.”

“It was seriously doubted that we could beat good opponents, and rightly so,” said Kroos about the status quo before the game in France. However, it was “just a test match” and “that needs to be confirmed. We know that there are attempts from outside to build up a certain height.”

In general, German football fans find it difficult to represent a balanced and sober position. “There is nothing between being eliminated in the preliminary round and being European champions – and now we are European champions again. A week ago we had zero points in the preliminary round.”

Kroos: “Many people felt a difference”

After his strong comeback, Kroos made it clear that before his first appearance since 2022 he was “excited” about “what the mood has changed. I wanted to go in as unbiased as possible.” He couldn’t notice “that many people bring a backpack with bad memories and feelings.” He also justified this with Julian Nagelsmann’s numerous squad changes, including the nomination of four Stuttgart players.

“I heard around what it was like recently. Many people confirmed that they felt a difference when they were together, including in terms of training.” Of course, he himself doesn’t have this comparison to previous games.

Nagelsmann previously only knew Kroos from the phone. After the first few days together, he praised his “absolutely clear” demeanor. “A clarity in his head – in the meeting, in the distribution of certain roles, in training ideas and game ideas and requirements for the respective positions.” This always helps “a team that comes from a certain level of uncertainty.”

“You can still say it’s cool or not”

Ultimately, says Kroos, it’s always about achieving maximum sporting success. “Then you can still say it’s cool or not. “Nobody is forced to come here,” the Real star explains.

The DFB team can confirm the positive impression from Lyon against the Netherlands on Tuesday evening (from 8:45 p.m. in LIVETICKER). “That’s what we’re longing for again after years, that we can get a certain positive consistency. And we don’t have that yet.”
