Threads Introduces Real-Time Sports Scores Feature, Following Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s Announcement

This should give the platform a more “real-time” feel.

Tl;dr

  • The social network Threads will broadcast live sports scores.
  • This initiative was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Users will be able to search teams to see the updated score.
  • The functionality resembles that of X, which already broadcast scores in 2017.

Threads, a sports platform

The social network Threads announced last week an attractive proposition for all sports fans. According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement, the platform will begin streaming “live sports scores”. The first sport to benefit from this new feature will be NBA basketball.

In practice, this initiative results in very simple and intuitive use. During a game, users will only have to do a simple search for the teams they prefer and they will see the updated score. Likewise, once the game is over, the search will display the score final. Additionally, they will also be able to find the time of the next match by searching for it in advance.

This way of doing things is reminiscent of how X works. In fact, since 2017, this platform has already been showing live sports scores.

A renewed interaction

Sports information in Threads is not limited to displaying scores. Indeed, each score will be associated with the logos of the two teams. By clicking on these logos, users will be redirected to a discussion on this team.

The photo-sharing social network Instagram, which is owned by the same company, recently decided to stop recommending political content. So it makes sense that Threads also wants to change its approach and is looking to “capture the mood in real time” of a trendy social network with an emphasis on sport.

Concurrence et innovations

Threads’ decision to enter this sports field comes as other similar platforms have also focused on sports. Recently, Apple announced its own sports initiative by offering real-time statistics for several major leagues, including the NBA, in its Sports app for iPhone.

Beyond this sporting novelty, Threads also announced last week a new system to adjust the algorithms by swiping left and right of publications. A beta version allowing users to share content on Mastodon and other fediverse services was also demonstrated.
