The Bochum trainer exudes a remarkable calmness that is particularly noticeable in this industry. This may also have something to do with an unusual career path.

For Thomas Letsch, RB Leipzig’s visit to the stadium on Castroper Straße this Saturday (3:30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Bundesliga and on Sky) is a special event for several reasons. On the one hand, the VfL Bochum coach made his Bundesliga debut against Rasenballsport in October 2022, and on the other hand, he will meet colleague Marco Rose, with whom he not only worked together in the youth academy at RB Salzburg, but also competed.

Letsch would have liked to become head coach at the Austrian club in 2017, but Rose was promoted to this position. Maybe because he had a more significant career in professional football. Or because he propagates the style of play that has been cultivated at the RB locations for years. Letsch, on the other hand, made it clear on his first day at work at VfL that he couldn’t stand the term “RB football”. The 55-year-old Swabian seeks and finds his own path – with astonishing success.
