During 2023, five out of 10 Mexicans claimed to be victims of harassment through a spy application installed on their cell phone by their partner or a close person, indicated the cybersecurity company Kaspersky.
According to the study The state of stalkerware 2023, the technology firm surveyed more than 20,000 users worldwide to detect the use of these apps that are disguised as parental control, but are actually used to spy on and monitor others. person.

“Contrary to parental control apps, which are tools for parents concerned about their children’s online safety, stalkerware is installed without the victim’s consent and offers control of their photos, bank transactions or even their conversations” , said Judith Tapia, consumer product manager for Mexico at Kaspersky.
Olimpia Coral, promoter of the Olimpia Law, which punishes and criminalizes digital violence, especially the dissemination of intimate images, shared that a victim discovers that she has a spy app installed until her information is shared without her consent.
“This type of digital harassment has psychological, physical and even economic impacts. The victims feel persecuted, they feel vulnerable with their information and all of this has an impact on their mental health,” Coral shared with El Sol de México.
The activist and defender of digital spaces highlighted that despite the existence of legislation such as the Olimpia Law itself, challenges still persist in access to justice in digital environments.
“It is necessary to understand that perpetrators of digital harassment and violence are becoming more professional in the use of technology to control women.
“Additional measures are still required to effectively address digital violence and ensure protection and access to justice for victims,” he added.
This type of app works in the background on the devices, meaning that the affected people are completely unaware that their digital activity is being monitored. To install it, the perpetrators install the app on the victim’s phone without them realizing it.
The Kaspersky report found that couples use these types of applications the most, but with a more marked tendency to be used against women.

“Although 34 percent agree with spying on their partner, only 10 percent confessed to having installed an application or having made some configuration that allowed them to have access to their partner’s device,” added Tapia.
According to Kaspersky, the number of people affected by these apps grew almost six percent last year. At the regional level, Mexico is the second country where the most cases of espionage have been identified, only behind Brazil.
