They recreate Dr. Atl’s voice with Artificial Intelligence – El Sol de México

A total of 25 works, mostly unpublished, that reflect the friendship between the painter Gerardo Murillo Coronado, better known as Dr. Atl, with his family doctor, José Palacios Macedo, are exhibited in the exhibition El doctor del Dr. Atl in the Kaluz Museum.

The exhibition highlights the projection of a contemporary video, titled “The best of witnesses”, approximately 10 minutes long, in which impressive aerial images of the Mexican geographical relief and the Paricutin volcano are observed, which are accompanied by a voice, like a wise old man, which appears to be that of Dr. Atl himself, but is really a “recreation” made by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Generated from a recording kept by the National Sound Library in which the painter is heard giving a lecture about his frustrated city project, “Olinka”, this sound simulation reproduces a reading of fragments of the texts, authored by Dr. Atl ” A new genre of landscape” (1958) and “How a volcano is born” (1950), which are key pieces for understanding his aesthetics and his work.

“It is a specifically educational and mediation element, to talk about something very specific. First of all (in this exhibition) we warn the public that the voice they are going to hear is made by AI. This marks how this technological medium helps Dr. Atl’s written voice to be heard,” explained Miguel Fernández Félix, director of the Kaluz Museum.

Both the director of the museum and the curator of the exhibition, Lucía Ortiz, mentioned that the original idea of reproducing Dr. Atl’s voice was that of the company that made the video, however, they pointed out that there are already several technologies with AI that They are used in various museums.

THE BEST OF THE SICK

As part of the museum line of the Kaluz Museum, which has proposed to “address the history of painting from other discourses”, as Miguel Fernández Félix explained, this exhibition gives a reading of the friendship between Dr. Atl and the doctor Palacios Macedo , to whom, it is considered, the painter gave several of his paintings in gratitude for his attention or simple friendship, from 1940 until the end of his days.

Composed of photographs, oil paintings, engravings, drawings, illustrations, journalistic, photographic and personal documents, the exhibition shows part of Dr. Atl’s evolution as a landscape painter, but also gives an account of the cultural environment in which both doctors moved, since Palacios Macedo was a prominent figure in medicine in Mexico, as director of the Faculty of Medicine.

“Macedo was a unique character, he was one of the most outstanding doctors of the first half of the 20th century. He is little remembered by people, unlike other doctors, and I think the reason is because he was very little involved in politics, and more dedicated to medicine, art and bohemia,” Alexis Palacios said during the inauguration, grandson of José Palacios Macedo.

The exhibition includes the work of the caricaturist Ernesto García Cabral (1990-1968), which contrasts with that of Dr. Atl and attests to the importance of the doctor Palacios Macedo in the cultural and social environment of his time, as captured in a mural that was in the extinct hotel-restaurant L’Escargot, in the Nápoles neighborhood, where he was portrayed along with other characters such as Diego Rivera and Agustín Lara.

About the relationship between Dr. Atl and Palacios Macedo, the exhibition exhibits writings between them, in addition to a first edition of the book “How a Volcano is Born” (1950), edited by the painter, and dedications such as one that reads: “The best of all the sick, he greets the best of all doctors, and sends him in these lines his best wishes, which naturally extend to the entire Palacios Macedo family. […] Tomorrow this resurrected man will be in Paricutín who hopes to scrub the volcano, since on the other occasion the volcano scrubbed him.”
