Theft of steel on highways doubled during 2023 – El Sol de México

The theft of steel products on highways doubled in 2023 compared to the previous year, reported the National Steel Chamber (Canacero).

During last year, the agency recorded the theft of 9,124 tons of finished products, equivalent to 150 million pesos.

David Gutierrez, outgoing president of Canacero, stressed that one of the main problems facing the industry is insecurity.

He highlighted that this affects the costs of the industry, which in Mexico has eight times more security personnel than in the United States.

The main products stolen by organized crime, he detailed, are rod, with 44 percent of the total, followed by coil and wire, with 16 and 13 reasons, respectively.

The manager added that the industry will invest $5.7 billion in the country in the next three years, which is added to the $5.4 billion it has injected so far this six-year term.

He added that the United States’ accusations that China is using Mexico to export steel to its territory, evading tariffs, are unfounded, and assured that the industry together with the Ministry of Economy is working on this issue.
