The Tricolor is still far from generational change

In the midst of the Qatar World Cup, former soccer player Jaime Lozano formed a team with 33 players on a magnetic board who could be the generational replacement for Mexico heading into future competitions. His plans were to build a base of elements trained in the Liga Mx, with different profiles and without the experienced Guillermo Ochoa, Raúl Jiménez and Henry Martín. Surrounded by other coaches on a television program, Jimmy used to repeat that playing differently was possible, because he knew at least three alternatives per position and the majority shared his thoughts.

After nine months at the head of the Tricolor, Lozano has not only kept most of the names he inherited from the Argentine Gerardo Martino, criticized for not renewing his calls, but he has also been accused of not giving minutes to young talents like Santiago Giménez, scorer with Feyenoord in the Eredivisie and who remained on the bench during the semifinal against Panama in the Concacaf Nations League while Martín and the Colombian-Mexican Julián Quiñones were starters.

It weighs a lot on a player, says former World Cup player Miguel Layún when he sees in a video the forward trained in Cruz Azul kicking a cooler upon his return to the bench. Santi comes from Europe, he is in a good moment and he only expressed his discomfort. That is preferable to whether or not he doesn’t care whether he plays for the national team or not. Between Martino’s last formation in Qatar and the team that Lozano used to advance to Sunday’s final against the United States, there are only six differences: the absences of Alexis Vega, Héctor Moreno and Héctor Herrera, in places now occupied by Quiñones, Jesús Orozco and Érick Sánchez.

few changes

Giménez, who was left out of the World Cup, is in the place left by the Argentine-Mexican Rogelio Funes Mori, while Érick Aguirre is the replacement for Kevin Álvarez. The rest of those selected in the League of Nations were part of Martino’s process, with the exception of the goalkeepers who were not active, such as Rodolfo Cota and Alfredo Talavera, and whose replacement was in the hands of Luis Malagón and Julio González. Even though Mexico was champion in the Gold Cup and today is a finalist again in the area, a large sector of fans on social networks criticize the coach’s change of position.

The coaches do not like us to show our discontent, because it shows them, adds Layún about the case of Giménez, considered on that magnetic board of 2022 as the main forward in the future of the Tricolor.

It is a lack of respect for the third best scorer in the Eredivisie, Jimmy is complicit in what is happening. If he had chosen Argentina, Santi would be a substitute for Lautaro (Martínez) and Julián (Álvarez), not Henry Martín, wrote the users of X, among many other messages. Regarding this general discomfort, Lozano explained on Thursday that the departure of three of his elements due to physical discomfort prevented the attacker’s change.

It wasn’t the intention. We wanted Santi to have minutes, but there were three players who suffered a little physically, among them Julián (Araujo), and that prevented us from making the change, the national coach mentioned before confirming the loss of the Las Palmas defender, who will not be in Sunday’s game against the United States and Jorge Sánchez will return in his place. Defenseman Johan Vásquez and forward Quiñones reported physical ailments, due to muscle overload, and will be evaluated by doctors to be part of the team at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
