The Rise of Pickleball in France: A Fun and Accessible Racket Sport on the Rise

Created in the United States in 1965, at the crossroads of tennis, padel, badminton and ping-pong, pickleball arrived in France in 2014 in Fayence in the Var and then attracted around sixty followers. The national Pickleball France association created in 2015 will be formed into a federation in 2018. This racket sport has the advantage of being accessible and fun.

It was during a trip to Marseille that Med Marah, president of the 60 and over badminton section of the ESBBSL in Buxerolles, discovered this discipline. Seduced by its user-friendliness, he learned the rules and proposed it to members, who were all enthusiastic when they discovered it.

In doubles and singles

« Whether you are a fan of racquet sports or not, the pleasure of playing and having fun is immediately there. It’s a unifying sport,” he explains. “Dynamic, physical, the exchanges allow you to have fun and vary the activities of the association”adds host Jacqueline Eugène.

Pickleball practice can be competitive or family, mixed or intergenerational. Young people can play with adults. To practice this sport, you each have a racket and a perforated plastic ball on a badminton court above a tennis-type net. In general, this sport is played in doubles but can also be played in singles, indoors or outdoors.

The match, lasting approximately twenty minutes, is played over eleven points like a ping-pong set and its points can only be scored on serve. At the end of 2023, the French Pickball Federation had 480 licensees and 19 affiliated associations.
