Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher believes that the Anfield atmosphere will play a crucial role in the match against Manchester City, which could be a turning point in determining the Premier League champions this season.
Liverpool vs City will be held on Sunday (10/3/2024) at 22.45 WIB. The two teams are only one point apart in the standings. The Reds collected 63 points, while The Citizens had 62 points.
Looking into this match, Liverpool has good capital. It has been more than a year since Juergen Klopp’s team has never lost at Anfield, most recently when they were defeated by Real Madrid 2-5 on 21 February 2023 in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 last season.
After that, Liverpool went through 29 matches with 25 wins and 4 draws. Apart from that, City have never won at an Anfield full of spectators since 2003. This is an advantage that must be maximized by the Red Merseyside camp.
“Anfield has been crucial for us in the past in matches as important as this. We know the crowd will support us 100 percent and we need to use this as an advantage,” said Kelleher, quoted by The Athletic.
“But we have to play well to create momentum for them to continue encouraging us. City are probably the best team in the world so we know the game will be difficult but we are ready to face this test.”
There is still a long way to go in the hunt for the title, but this is an important match. “We’re just going to focus on getting a win on Sunday, nothing more than that, then from there we’ll see what the impact of that win will be in the future,” explained Kelleher.
Phil Foden et al actually beat Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield in February 2021 in the Premier League, but at that time the match was held behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, they are challenged to do it in front of thousands of Liverpudlians present at the stadium.
