BarcelonaThe port of Barcelona is a city within a city and in the universe of Iron hand, the new Netflix series, a space where all kinds of irregularities take place, such as drug trafficking and theft of goods. In the fiction, which premieres today on the platform, Eduard Fernández plays Joaquín Machado, owner of the main terminal in Barcelona and a man used to getting everything he wants. Machado rules with an iron fist – metaphorically and literally, because he has an amputated hand that has been replaced by an iron hook – the port and his family, whose members work together.

“He is a character who never trusts anyone, but at the same time he is a recognizable character. He is a guy who could be anyone’s neighbor”, explains Eduard Fernández to ARA, who defines the series as “a game of loyalties”. A Iron hand all the characters dance to the rhythm set by Machado, starting with his daughter and son, played by Natalia de Molina and Enric Auquer. “It’s a series of psychopaths and above all they’re family: the father has dyed the rest of his psychopathy, except for the daughter,” reflects Auquer. For the actor, Iron handcreated by Lluís Quílez (Below zero), is a fiction where all conflicts are pushed to the limit.

Action and testosterone

The masculinity and testosterone tone are almost omnipresent in this one thriller of action, because there is only one important female character, Rocío, the protagonist’s daughter. “I have always been very interested in women who move in completely male environments, how they grow up, how they develop and how they learn. Rocío has a bit of that: she is a woman in the shadows who slowly it will soon come to light. When I went to the port, I didn’t see any women there and that shocked me a lot,” explains Natalia de Molina.

Fernández leads a cast that, in addition to Auquer and De Molina, also includes Sergi López, who plays the protagonist’s brother; Jaime Lorente, in the role of Machado’s son-in-law; and Chino Darín, who gives life to Víctor, a port worker with an important secret. Darín confesses that a condition of his signing for the series was to lose his Argentinian accent, a toll that has not been easy for him. “The truth is that it was many months and it became a bit heavy for me. It is very difficult for me not to speak with my Argentinian accent. You have to be constantly aware that your accent does not slip, it is not it makes me enjoy my work more,” admits the actor, who is closely linked to Spain thanks to his relationship with Úrsula Corberó.

The series was filmed in the port of Barcelona, a large space that surprised all the members of the cast. “We knew it was big, but it’s so much more than we imagined. From the time you got in the car until you got to the set filming could take twenty minutes,” explains Fernández. The cast agree that the environment is hostile, especially due to the cold and humid weather conditions. The artists recognize that the filming of Iron hand, full of action scenes, was very demanding. “Shooting action on a set, where everything is controlled, is not the same as doing it in Barcelona, at night and in the winter. In addition, Lluís has a way of shooting with which he pulls shots off his sleeve: when you think you’re done, there’s still half to do,” says Lorente.
