Is a collaboration between Günter Bresnik and Dominic Thiem still possible?
For days there has been a passionate discussion – at least on social media – about whether a new collaboration between Dominic Thiem and Günter Bresnik could be possible and useful again. The internationally renowned star trainer was highly responsible for the successes that the Lichtenwörther native achieved in the past. In 2019, however, the separation took place in a dispute that culminated in court and resulted in what felt like an eternally long War of the Roses between Bresnik and Thiem’s father Wolfang.
A lot of porcelain was broken back then, and Thiem spoke of a kind of emancipation that had become necessary for him. Interesting: It is precisely the lack of emancipation from his family, which now runs through a wildly grown network of private and professional life, that Günter Bresnik highlights in his current commentary in the “Trainer Box” section in the “Salzburger Nachrichten” as the biggest obstacle in Thiem’s development. The ex-coach of Boris Becker and Gael Monfils follows a similar line that both real and amateur experts have brought up again and again in recent months and years.
Honesty and openness would be necessary
In the same comment, Bresnik also writes the following noteworthy sentence: “One thing is certain for me: If Dominic says yes to a serious new attempt, then he will find the right trainer for him – and no trainer who practices his profession with heart and soul can then say no.” It is by no means unreasonable to interpret this formulation as a cautious approach to one another, as the 62-year-old describes himself extremely accurately with this job description.
Nobody – not even the most unreflective and simple-minded social media commentator – can really want Dominic Thiem to make good on his threat from last week and hang up his bat at the end of the season. The 2020 US Open champion gave us too much joy with his great skills.
