The New Bombonera: Plans for Expansion Revealed by Juan Román Riquelme

This is the model of what would be the new Bombonera

It will not be Bombonera 360, nor will it be Bombonera Siglo XXI, the Slovenian Project or a stadium on Demarchi Island. His real name is still unknown, but the master plan that Juan Román Riquelme would have approved in the last few hours to expand the Boca Juniors field came to light. “They have been talking for several years, since 2020. It has been handled secretly for years,” was what journalist Pablo Ladaga commented on his YouTube channel.

What is this plan to increase the capacity of the legendary Xeneize stadium about? Broadly speaking, the idea is to gain meters from the current Bombonera towards the parking area. In addition, two trays would be built above the boxes, the elbows would be closed and there would also be a roof. With the increase in capacity in each of the stands, the maximum capacity would be 91,452 spectators, greater than the almost 85,000 that the River Plate Monumental has today.

“Riquelme gave him a thumbs up, they agreed, they finished formatting it and the new Bombonera is going to be built,” Ladaga revealed on the La Verdad San Telmo channel. In this way, the Alberto J. Armando, which currently has more than 59,000 places due to the extraction of seats and other corners that were modified in the last administration with Jorge Ameal as president, with more than 30 thousand new spaces for members.

Of the 30,704 places in popular spaces, the stands would have 50,000 in total. In addition, from the 20,766 seats there would be a total of 34,200. And the box sector would also be significantly expanded, from 2,166 to 7,252, which will also mean an important source of income not only to carry out the work but also to cover future expenses and needs.

Pablo Ladaga talks about the new Bombonera project

It was not mentioned how much the project would cost, but a range was opened with three sources of income to finance it: 1) “a very strong sponsor who would put a high percentage for the work”; 2) the sale of the new boxes; and 3) the contribution of the club’s own treasury with the millions of dollars that are necessary since the economy “is healthy.”

If the master plan is carried out in this administration of Riquelme as president, the Boca stadium would surpass the River stadium in capacity and would also become the largest in South America (today they are the Mas Monumental with 84,567, the Monumental in Peru with 80,093 and the Maracaná in Rio de Janeiro with 78,838).

“Once the development of the project is finished, comes the preliminary phase, which is the one before starting the work. The feasibility phase. There you can see how much feasibility there is to capture it. It has to do with the structure of the Bombonera and a lot of technical things that professionals will look at to build on the modification so that the project has a remodeled but beautiful Bombonera and brand new stadium,” Ladaga said. And he concluded: “The architectural firm is totally convinced that this can be carried out.”

Until now there have been no official voices that have echoed either this or the project that was publicly presented by the architect Rodrigo Vidal, who claimed to have had contacts with the club’s general secretary, Ricardo Rosica. In one of his last appearances on TV, Riquelme limited himself to expressing: “The first thing we have to do is do it on the same land we have, to see if more people come in without disturbing anyone and invite all the neighbors to come to the field and continue living next to the Bombonera. “It is the first thing we are going to do, it is under study.”
