“The Last Repair Shop” Director Proud Fu Wins Second Oscar for Best Documentary Short

[The Epoch Times, March 11, 2024](Epoch Times reporter Li Ping reported in Toronto) At the Oscars ceremony on Sunday (March 10), the 33-year-old young director Proud Fu from Halifax “The Last Repair Shop,” co-directed by Ben Proudfoot and Kris Bowers, won the award for Best Documentary Short. This is his second Oscar win.

“The Last Repair Shop” tells the story of a studio in Los Angeles that provides free instruments and free instrument repair services to public school students. Currently, Los Angeles is one of the last cities in the United States to still provide this free service to public school students. In his acceptance speech, Powers said that people need to solve this problem. Music education can not only create great musicians, but also shape outstanding individuals.

Joining Proudfoot and Powers on stage was 11-year-old violinist Porche Brinker, who appears in the film. The awards ceremony was attended by many stars. Ryan Gosling, an actor from Ontario, sang “I’m Just Ken”, the theme song of the Oscar-nominated movie “Barbie”.

In 2022, the short film “The Queen of Basketball” directed by Louderfoot won his first Oscar. “Basketball Queen” tells the story of the late female basketball player Lusia (Lucy) Harris.

Louderfoot said he never expected to win again and that the purpose of making the film was to inspire people and raise some points that didn’t get enough attention. His award-winning short films represent something that many people consider very important.

He also revealed that he and the film crew plan to host a post-award party and plan to return to Halifax to celebrate in his hometown.

In the late star recognition segment of the award ceremony that day, the late Toronto musician Robbie Robertson and actor Matthew Perry were remembered.

Canadian actors Catherine O’Hara and Brendan Fraser also attended the award ceremony that day and presented awards.
