Minister of Youth and Sports Here Ariotedjo comment after Indonesia Open 2024 It was not held at Indonesia’s Gelora Bung Karno Arena (GBK) due to lighting infrastructure problems.

The Indonesia Open, BWF World Tour Super 1000, has actually been decided to be held at the Indonesia Arena, on 4-9 June. The announcement regarding the move from Istora to Indonesia Arena was made at the Indonesia Open last year.

However, in the end the plan was canceled on the grounds that the lighting infrastructure of the venue, which was built in 2022, was unable to accommodate the need for lighting equipment for the event.

PPK GBK, through the Acting Head of the Indonesia Arena Unit Iis Haerudin, said that to hold the Indonesia Open it was necessary to install 12 light riggings with a weight of 8-12 tons. And the roof of the Indonesia Arena couldn’t accommodate it.

The recommended limit suggested by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing is 2.5 tons.

Menpora Dito has learned about the cancellation of the use of Indonesia Arena for Indonesia Open 2024.

“Yes, that’s right, so I asked the organizers of the Indonesia Open, it turns out that in the Indonesia Arena there is no way to hang lights, the rigging doesn’t work. Yesterday they even looked for a lighting consultant in Europe but it seems they haven’t found a solution,” said Dito to detikSport.

“Yes, the Indonesia Arena at that time was actually designed more for basketball and concerts. Maybe we have to think about the lighting problem later, because it was purely a technical matter, a lighting problem,” he continued.

The cancellation of the use of the Indonesia Arena made the organizing committee Indonesia Open 2024 forced to return to Istora GBK. In fact, the aim of the move at that time was to accommodate the high interest of badminton lovers in the tepok bulu sports tournament.

Looking at the capacity of the two sports halls, Istora can accommodate 6 thousand to 7 thousand. Meanwhile, the Indonesia Arena can accommodate twice that amount, namely around 16,088 seats.

“Yes, I’m also waiting to see what infrastructure will be needed to illuminate the badminton court at the Indonesia Arena. And we will definitely try to modify and upgrade it,” said Dito.
