The Importance of Sport in Recovery: A Badminton Diary

LAST TEAM MATCH • DIARY • NOTE #1

Cycled up to the Golden Corner on Friday afternoon and ordered delivery of 20 pizzas on Saturday evening in Den Store Hal. Continue the 200 m to the hall to put my drinks in the depot’s fridge. In the hall, two young men were busy – I had never seen them before, so naturally I went into the hall to have a closer look. I think I saw a familiar face sitting on the bench and approaching me with an outstretched hand to say hello. Jette, a former colleague from the outpatient substance abuse center in Næstved, where we were both employed in the 00s. She was in the hall with a group of former addicts who, as part of their day treatment and rehabilitation, had started playing badminton. I really knew. Her colleague Gitte, current substance abuse therapist in Vordingborg and my friend, had asked me about vacancies a few months ago. Had forgotten all about it.

Sport, together with others, is useful in the way back to life. To preserve life, healthy and social life.

The last match of the season for VBK1 in the Danish series’ relegation game, pool C, starts at 14:00. We meet at home Charlottenlund 2 and for both teams the match is meaningless, as no one can move down anymore.

So far, the plan – team leader Steffen’s plan – is that I only play the second mix with debutante, 16-year-old Mathilde, and that VBK uses a total of 9 men and 4 women for the team. New rules this season allow a player to be used in only one match.

Mathilde had her debut at VBK2 in September 2022 in Rødby, also with me as a partner, and was terribly nervous. Since then, we have become a regular mixed couple – and she has become much better on the court, stronger, tougher and much calmer…it couldn’t get more nervous than in Rødby either! She then stood completely still on the field. Stiff with nerves.

On the field, you are exposed to good and bad. The rectangle of 6.1 mx 13.4 m, 817,000 cm2, is a development arena on several parameters. There is nowhere to hide here. No one to leave the responsibility and the ball to.

Later today, Mathilde and I are on the same track, in the same battle. The two sexes in collaboration with a 40-year age difference. There aren’t many sports where that can be done!

This was note #1. There will be more during the day.
