The Astra Cinema Transforms into a Judo Hall for Special Screening of Tatami

Tuesday 26 March special screening of the film Tatami
The chairs will disappear underground, in their place the traditional Japanese flooring

The Astra cinema in Florence is transformed into a judo hall. The over one hundred armchairs will disappear underground, in their place there will be real tatami on the floor, the traditional Japanese internal flooring made up of modular rectangular panels. The cinema screen will also lower as a result. Viewers are advised to bring a pillow from home for more comfortable viewing. All this happens on Tuesday 26 March at 9pm for the special screening of Tatami by Guy Nattiv, Zar Amir Ebrahimi.

The film tells a story of great emotional impact and great relevance: for the first time in history an Israeli director and an Iranian director join their gazes to tell a story of rare power. Leila and her coach Maryam are representing Iran at the World Judo Championships when they receive an ultimatum from the Islamic Republic. Leila’s positive series of victories risks making her clash on the tatami with the athlete from Israel, a country that Iran does not recognise. The regime then orders her to fake an injury and withdraw from the competition, otherwise there will be serious repercussions. With the safety of herself and her family at risk, Leila faces an impossible choice: abide by the regime’s will, as Maryam implores her to do, or keep fighting, for the gold medal and for freedom.

All viewers will be given an alternative print of the film poster. The screening is in collaboration with Bim distribution and Ronin Florence, Jigoro Kano Florence, Judo Club Bagno a Ripoli, Izumo Florence. (Tickets: €9.00 full price; €7.00 reduced).
