Tbilisi Grand Slam: Austrian Judoka Set to Compete with High Hopes for Olympic Qualification

The fourth of nine Grand Slam tournaments in the 2024 Olympic year will take place in Tbilisi (GEO) from Friday to Sunday. A total of 531 judoka from 83 nations took part, including five Austrians. On Friday, the first day of the competition, two ÖJV judoka, Katharina Tanzer (-48/SU Norium Leibnitz/ST) and Vache Adamyan (-60/UJZ Mühlviertel/Upper Austria), will be in action in Georgia. At the start, the 28-year-old Styrian will face Leyla Aliyeva (AZE), number 22 in the world rankings. Iulia Semikolenova (MGL) would wait in round 2. Vache Adamyan (-60/UJZ Mühlviertel/OÖ) drew Muhammadsoleh Quvatov (TJK) as his second round opponent. In round 3 it was against the top seeded Giorgi Sardalashvili (GEO).

“We hope – despite the strong line-up in Tbilisi – for one or two top 7 placements. According to paper, Katharina Tanzer and Thomas Scharfetter have a good chance of being able to collect important world rankings and Olympic qualification points in Georgia. The draw was a success this time, especially for Thomas, as he recently had almost impossible tasks twice in a row. Laurin Böhler also has beatable opponents on his way to the top 7,” believes ÖJV sports director Markus Moser.

The other opponents of the ÖJV actors:

Saturday, – 63 kg, 2nd round: Magdalena Krssakova (AUT/JC Sirvan/W) – Joanne Van Lieshout (NED, No. 10 in the IJF Ranking, 1. both GP in Linz, 3. both Grand Slam in Baku);

Sunday, – 90 kg, 1st round: Thomas Scharfetter (ESV Sanjindo Bischofshofen/S) – ;-100 kg, 2nd round: Laurin Böhler (LZ Hohenems/V) – Winner of the duel Cedric Olivar (FRA)/Adam Sangariev (AIN ), in the event of a victory, the two-time Linz triumphant Leonardo Goncalves (BRA, No. 10 in the world, won against Böhler in Linz at the beginning of March) would wait.
