Taquitos suffer from drought and their price rises more than 15% – El Sol de México

Tacos, a delicacy of traditional Mexican food, do not escape inflation. Since the middle of last year, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported an increase of up to 15 percent annually in its price.

Whether it is carnitas, suadero, steak, roast, chop or chicken, to name a few varieties, the increase in cost is the same. Inegi data indicate that Mexico City is one of the entities most impacted at the end of February.

This entity is followed by Monterrey and Guadalajara where, according to Inegi, the average cost for a package of five tacos and a 600 milliliter soft drink is around 75 or 80 pesos, nine percent more expensive than what it cost the same month. from last year.

The rise in the price of tacos is explained by various factors, including the rise in their main inputs such as tortillas, vegetables and meats since the middle of last year.

In the case of vegetables and meats, both beef and pork, their price rose due to the bad weather conditions that the country suffered in mid-2023, mainly the droughts in the central and northern regions.

This year, a slower pace of economic growth would help inflation moderate further. On the other hand, current geopolitical tensions and climate events, for example droughts, may put further pressure on the prices of energy and food products. Alejandro Saldaña, chief economist at Grupo Financiero Ve por Más.

According to the Bank of Mexico (Banxico), when a climatic event occurs, it is “normal” for the price of some goods to rise. Through its analysis “The impact of tropical cyclones on food prices”, Banxico highlighted that with these natural events alone the price of fruits and vegetables rises up to 0.1 percent in the month after the impact.

“In the context of global warming, in addition to tropical cyclones, other extreme weather events such as heat waves and droughts could increase their importance as a risk of pressure on the prices of food products,” the institution added.

The latest data from the Mexican Drought Monitor (MSM) of the National Water Commission (Conagua) indicate that until March 15, the northwest and center of the country were suffering from extreme and exceptional drought.

In addition, 32.1 percent of the national territory suffers from moderate and severe drought, while 14.46 percent has abnormally dry conditions.

In Mexico City, to mitigate the impact of the price spike, taqueros try to offer meal packages or promotions of two tacos for the price of one.

Another measure adopted is to prepare tortillas by hand, because with this they believe that their product can yield more, coupled with the fact that it becomes an added value unlike eating a taco with a reheated or oil-dipped tortilla.

However, they recognize that their clientele no longer consumes the same. Before, the average consumption was five tacos and a soft drink, today they only enjoy two and no drinks.

We tried to contain the price as much as we could. Maybe we don’t earn as much as we used to, but those two or five extra pesos from each taco help us not lose out on a day-to-day basis, said Armando Cruz, who runs a taqueria in the Coyoacán mayor’s office.

According to Inegi, in the Mexican capital you can find two tacos and a 600 milliliter drink, soft drink or flavored water, from 45 pesos. The most expensive varieties are barbacoa and carnitas tacos, whose average price per unit is 25 pesos.
