SV Meppen Secures DFB Cup Qualification with State Cup Victory

SV Meppen was the first regional league team to move into the 2024/25 DFB Cup. In a close and competitive game, the SVM won 2-0 against league rivals BW Lohne thanks to an own goal.

In the Hänsch Arena, which was filled with 13,041 spectators and was sold out, it was the guests from Lohne who were more active in the first half and also had the better scoring chances. But home keeper Julius Pünt kept his box clean and ensured that the game went into the locker room goalless.

After the break it was tight and competitive, both teams gave each other nothing, the importance of the game was clear. Finally, it was an own goal that put Meppen on course: Luca Prasse broke through brilliantly on the right and crossed inwards. Kai Westerhoff wanted to clear the ball and unfortunately ran the ball backwards into his own goal (72′).

The guests from Lohne were now of course challenged and threw everything forward in the final phase. In the end, keeper Marko Dedovic also moved up. However, without success, on the contrary, because Meppen launched the decisive counterattack: Jonathan Wensing ultimately pushed the ball into the empty goal and made the decision (90th + 5th).

A few seconds later it was over and the cheers in Meppen were huge. The SVM won the state cup in Lower Saxony and was the first regional league team to secure a ticket for the DFB Cup in the coming season. According to the DFB framework calendar, the first round will take place from August 16th to 19th, 2024. Since the Supercup also takes place on August 17th, the cup games of the two teams will be postponed to August 27th and 28th.
