Survival Story: The Remarkable Journey of Aljami Durham, Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga Star

He is one of the greats of the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga: Aljami Durham (25). According to statistics, the Towers star with the explosive start is one of the five most effective professionals in the league.

But what hardly anyone knows: his life was on the brink very early on!

“I was born prematurely and arrived two months ahead of schedule,” says the development player in the BBL video format “Five Things”. Durham was born on September 30, 1998 in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. Dramatic hours followed the birth.

“My parents say that you could hold me in one hand,” reports Durham before the start of the remaining round on Sunday to pursuer Löwen Braunschweig (5 p.m., WELT TV). “The doctors told them I wouldn’t make it. There would be no chance.”

But they had made the calculation without “Al,” who weighs only a few hundred grams, and his family. “My mother sat by my side for a long time while I was hooked up to machines,” Durham sighs, fighting back tears. “And here I am today…”

1.93 meters tall, 82 kilos, ambidextrous (!) – and with 16 points, 4.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game, one of THE discoveries of the season.

Durham’s start in the professional business almost went wrong! After college, no NBA team wanted to sign him. Therefore, the fashion freak (has his own label) tried his luck at Greek club Lavrio in 2022. But he got little playing time, was fired in December – and ended up in Glasgow in the second-tier British league.

There he became the top scorer for the Caldonia Gladiators and won the cup with them. This is how the Hamburg Towers finally became aware of the versatile guard. Durham has to smile: “I have fought my whole life, in the truest sense of the word.”

Before the international break, Durham suffered several ankle injuries. To recover, he flew to the USA for a week to visit his family and his beloved husky Ace. Now the ligaments and ankles are fine again. Towers trainer Benka Barloschky (36): “Al is fit. It took him a few days to shake off the dust. You saw that. It’s been a long break for him without basketball.”
