Shortly before the eagerly awaited Rhine derby against Cologne on Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m., LIVE! on kicker) in Borussia Park, Gladbach has made a big deal in terms of Moritz Nicolas. The Foals gave the keeper, who was still bound until 2026, a new contract until 2029.

“Mo has confirmed the trust we have placed in him with excellent performances and has therefore absolutely earned this long-term contract extension,” Gladbach’s sports director Roland Virkus is quoted as saying: “We are very pleased that we have such an excellent staff in the goalkeeper position .”

Four different rental stations

Nicolas moved from Rot-Weiss Essen to Mönchengladbach in 2015. He guarded the U23 goal a total of 75 times in the Regionalliga West before being loaned out to Union Berlin (2019/20, a Bundesliga game), VfL Osnabrück (2020/21, a second division game) and Viktoria Köln (2021/ 22, 31 third division games).

Nicolas briefly returned to Mönchengladbach for the 2022/23 season and made his competitive debut for the Gladbach professionals in the first round game of the DFB Cup against SV Oberachern (9:1). Shortly afterwards, Nicolas was loaned out again – this time to the Dutch second division club Roda Kerkrade (30 league games).

In the summer of 2023, Nicolas finally returned to Borussia, where he was scheduled to be number two behind Jonas Omlin. After his long-term absence (shoulder surgery), Nicolas has been in goal for Borussia since matchday 3 and certainly did well (kicker grade average 3). There have been 22 Bundesliga and two DFB Cup appearances so far this season.

“Crazy” anticipation for the derby

Nicolas feels “super comfortable” at Borussia. “The loans were important for me in order to gain experience and match practice. But it was always my goal to come back to Borussia at some point,” he admits openly: “I had that in the back of my mind the whole time. That’s why I’m happy “To be here again now. This year feels like arrival.”

He describes the season so far as “very instructive”. The next special experience is coming up with the first derby home game: “It’s a very special game for all of us and one that we’re all really looking forward to. We want to show a significantly better performance than in the first leg (1:3, d.Red .), be aggressive in the duels, fully accept the derby and hopefully get three points in the end.” Nicolas will also see a need for improvement in himself (kicker grade 5).
