Struggles Continue for Cologne: Lack of Quality on the Pitch and Injury Woes for Key Players

The 5-1 debacle against Leipzig showed once again: Cologne lacks quality on the pitch in every corner.

Davie Selke (29) is back after breaking his foot. But like the 3-3 draw in Gladbach, it was only enough for a short appearance. Cologne’s best striker (5 goals) couldn’t achieve anything. After the international break, Selke should be back in the starting line-up to score goals.

The big question: What will happen to the permanently injured Luca Waldschmidt (27) and Mark Uth (32)? Can you still help Cologne save it? This is really the situation with the FC stars, who are so sorely missed!

At least Waldschmidt, who suffered a broken fibula in mid-January, has hope of a return to the relegation battle. The offensive man will also be traveling with FC to a short training camp in Algorfa (Spain) on Monday.

“With Luca, things are moving forward step by step. My plan in mind was that he would be able to work with the ball again during the international break and perhaps be integrated into training again afterwards. I think we’re pretty well on track. But everything takes time until it’s 100 percent okay again. And we give him this time too,” says trainer Timo Schultz (46).

At Uth the prognosis looks bleaker…

Is Uth’s career at risk of ending?

Nobody wants to know about the end of a career. “We’re still a long way from that,” says Christian Keller (45). But the sports boss can’t really rule it out either. Since August 2022, Uth hasn’t really gotten into shape and is constantly struggling with injuries (including 3 groin operations). After the Leipzig game, Keller made it public for the first time that Uth was initially suffering from an inner ligament strain that he had sustained during a test kick in Essen at the beginning of January. However, a shooting aggravated the injury again during a training comeback.

What’s next?

“If there isn’t another setback, I expect Mark to be back on the pitch in the next two or three weeks.” Uth is currently only doing running training.

As bitter as that is, it will hardly be enough to be fit again so that he can help his FC. Uth is quickly running out of time. He also lacks match practice due to his many previous injuries.
