Struggle for Space: Eaux-Vives Judo-Club Fighting for Survival in City Center

In the city center, practicing combat sports is not easy. For several years, the Eaux-Vives Judo-Club and its 188 students have been desperately looking for new premises. A study credit had been validated in 2022 by the municipal council to occupy a vacant space at the Eaux-Vives school. Today, the project is standing still.

A building bordering on unsanitary, premises increasingly cramped. For two years now, Alain Miserez and his judokas have been fighting for the survival of the club. Temporarily placed in a former room of the Eaux-Vives school, located opposite, the only club on the left bank could put the keys under the door.

“We have drawn a line under certain restorations, now we must find a solution”

A tatami of 200 to 250 m2. This is what the Eaux-Vives Judo-Club would like. This new place of around a hundred additional m2 would allow the 188 students, aged 4 to 14, to have a suitable environment. For Vincent Nussbaum, judo teacher, this closure would be detrimental for these children.

A project that is still waiting to be decided

In 2022, a study loan was validated by the Municipal Council to relocate the judo club in a former community hall of the Eaux-vives school. According to our sources, a few months later an architect was commissioned by the City of Geneva. A building authorization was even filed and validated at the end of 2023. Today, the planning department is not taking any action on this project: “We cannot follow up on your request concerning the final assignment as long as the Administrative Council has not decided definitively.”

According to our information, this room is coveted in particular to accommodate extracurricular activities, intended for Ukrainian refugees. The Administrative Council will make a decision after deciphering the study regarding the sharing of locations.

The Eaux-Vives Judo-Club contains among the largest number of licensees in the canton. For the moment, he is counting on the support of the City Sports Department. Without change, the club could close its doors permanently in the future.
