Peter Angelos, the owner of the Orioles, has died.

John Angelos’ leadership of the team resulted in a few modifications to the Orioles’ business. General Manager Mike Elias was granted greater authority to update and restructure the baseball operations department, in line with a major rebuilding effort. From 2017 to 2021, the O’s had a streak of losing seasons (the last three guided by Elias), but in 2022 they managed to win 83 games. The following season, they exceeded expectations by winning 101 games and clinching the AL East title. With a remarkable group of young talent in their roster, the Orioles have emerged as potential World Series contenders for this upcoming season and beyond.

We at MLB Trade Rumors extend our sympathies to the family, friends, and loved ones of Angelos.

The amount of money the Orioles spent varied depending on how well the team was doing, and they were in the top ten for spending in the league in 2017. Angelos had reservations about making certain types of investments related to baseball, particularly when it came to long-term contracts for pitchers, especially those with a history of injuries. Additionally, Angelos was well-known for his criticism of baseball’s international signing process, leading to the Orioles not participating in the international amateur market for a number of years.

On this day, Peter Angelos, the Orioles and the Angelos family confirmed that he passed away at 94 years old. He had been struggling with illness for several years and had withdrawn from public life. In 2020, his son John stepped in as the Orioles’ chairman and point person for official league matters.

In February, it was announced that the Orioles had been sold to a new ownership group led by David Rubenstein for .725 billion. The sale follows years of speculation and controversy about the team’s future, with concerns about legal and personal issues within the Angelos family and the impending expiration of their lease at Camden Yards in 2023. However, the Orioles have secured a new lease to remain at Camden Yards for the next 15 years and Rubenstein’s full ownership is expected to be approved by the league in the coming weeks. Initially set to take a 40% stake in the team, Rubenstein will now own the club in its entirety due to the passing of John Angelos.

During Angelos’ time as owner, the Orioles experienced many ups and downs on the field. Angelos had a strong desire to win and immediately increased the team’s payroll, bringing in high-profile free agents. This led to Baltimore making it to the ALCS in 1996 and 1997. However, there was a notable decline after their last ALCS appearance and the team did not have a winning season until 2012. Angelos faced criticism for his interference in baseball operations, resulting in a steady turnover of managers and general managers. Under the leadership of Buck Showalter and executive VP Dan Duquette, the Orioles saw improvements and had five seasons of .500 or better, making three postseason appearances and another trip to the ALCS in 2014.

Angelos, a native of Baltimore, amassed his wealth through a successful legal career, highlighted by a significant case in 1992 where he represented thousands of workers from various industries who were exposed to asbestos while on the job. In 1993, Angelos and a group of investors purchased the Orioles for 3 million and he quickly gained a reputation as a nonconformist among other baseball team owners during the 1994-95 players’ strike. While the strike was resolved before replacement players could take the field in 1995, Angelos’ refusal to use these players (whom he viewed as strikebreakers) garnered both resentment from his fellow owners and admiration from the MLBPA.
