Spalletti: “Retegui perfect, but Raspadori plays tomorrow. Nine changes compared to Thursday”

Luciano Spalletti spoke on the eve of tonight’s match against Ecuador, the second of two friendlies in America. The Italian coach had words of praise for Retegui on social media, who is bidding to be the 9th player in the next European Championship, and announced several lineup changes compared to Thursday against Venezuela. “Retegui has shown that he is perfect for that role – he said – and during the previous call-ups we didn’t call him because he was injured. He scored two great goals, as well as doing an important job for the team. Raspadori and I’ll change a lot: I said 7-8 players, but in this case it could also be 9. Yes, I already have the starting eleven in mind because in games like this it’s easier to anticipate the choices. Against Ecuador a more difficult match awaits us because they have quality and talent, speed and technique. I like the spirit of the group, we are very close to the correct behaviors that are needed. Construction from the bottom yes or no? The answer is yes, but not to the point of recklessness because if you then lose a ball and you take a penalty or concede a goal, it means that you haven’t evaluated things well. If the others are good at ‘mounting you’ and creating difficulties for you, you throw a ‘ball’ at the attacker who is defending the ball and allows you to go up. Retegui has shown that he knows how to do this.”
