What a season finale for the German snowboard cross hope Leon Ulbricht: In distant Canada, the Allgäu native raced to the second World Cup podium finish of his career. The victories went to a Canadian in the men’s race and a British woman in the women’s race.

Snowboard crosser Leon Ulbricht once again made a real statement in the last World Cup race of the season. The 19-year-old from SC Rötteln came third on Sunday (March 24th, 2024) in Mount Sainte-Anne, Canada. In the 19th World Cup race of his career, the Lörrach native celebrated his second podium – three weeks ago in the Spanish Sierra Nevada, Ulbricht even won.

World Cup high flyer Grondin wins

On Sunday, Ulbricht was only defeated by Canadian local hero Eliot Grondin and Cameron Bolton from Australia. In the duel for second place, the German narrowly lost out against Bolton in the photo finish. The 2022 junior world champion showed in confident heats that he is a force to be reckoned with in the coming season.

The overall World Cup had already been awarded to Eliot Grondin before the last race – the Canadian won the final with a lead of almost 350 points. Ulbricht is also the best German in eleventh place overall.

Women: Bankes wins – Trespeuch gets the ball

In the women’s category, Great Britain’s Charlotte Bankes won ahead of Michaela Moioli from Italy and Josie Baff from Australia. The Frenchwoman Chloe Trespeuch won the overall World Cup: fourth place in the final was enough for the two-time Olympic medalist to defend her overall lead with 50 World Cup points.

Fischer, Berg and Kirchwehm fail prematurely

While Leon Ulbricht was able to celebrate from a German perspective, the other Snowboard Germany starters failed prematurely: In the women’s category, the only German starter, Jana Fischer, was eliminated in the quarter-finals and finished eleventh on the day. In the men’s race, Leon Beckhaus and Paul Berg failed in the round of 16, finishing 19th and 26th respectively. For Umito Kirchwehm it was already over in the round of 16, he finished 34th on the day.
