The weak performance in the current season could also be Schalke 04’s downfall in the new season – especially in the DFB Cup.

Gelsenkirchen – FC Schalke 04 is fighting to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga and the existence of the club. By the way, it’s also about improving the starting position for the DFB Cup in the coming season.

Schalke 04 faces a bitter fate in the DFB Cup

Because: If the Royal Blues do not do better than 15th place in the 2nd Bundesliga table, the S04 would actually be a club from the amateur pot in the draw for the first round of the DFB Cup.

The Schalke lottery ball would then go into a pot with the three other basement children of the 2nd Bundesliga, the four best third division teams and the 24 representatives of the regional associations. This guarantees home advantage in round one, but would also give the “Knappen” a first or second division team as an opponent.

15th place or worse in League 2: Schalke 04 would go into the amateur pot

Progressing would therefore be a real challenge. Schalke 04 can use every cent. And the prize money in the DFB Cup is no longer just a penny for the Royal Blues.

Interesting: If Schalke 04 survives the first round of the cup in this scenario, S04 would go back into the professional pot in the draw for the second round of the cup. If it were against an amateur club, Schalke would no longer have home advantage. From the round of 16 onwards there will only be one draw pot anyway.

S04 can earn a lot of money in the DFB Cup

However, if the S04 reach at least 14th place in the table at the end of the current season, Schalke would be in the professional pot in the draw for the first round of the DFB Cup, as in previous years. At the start, the team would be challenged away and at least could not face a first division team.

In view of the existential fears surrounding the Berger Feld, the impending fate in the DFB Cup is currently not a high priority for players and those responsible. Staying in the league is initially above all else.

However: In the current season, there was over 400,000 euros for reaching the second round of the DFB Cup, and around 860,000 euros for reaching the eighth finals. A lot of money for the club from Gelsenkirchen.
