That’s it: the last big file (in terms of transactions) which was to be settled during the off-season has now reached its conclusion two weeks before the start of the season.
Dylan Cease was just traded to the San Diego Padres, as claimed by Jeff Passan and other reporters.
BREAKING: The San Diego Padres are finalizing a trade to acquire right-hander Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox, sources tell ESPN.

This offseason, the White Sox wanted to move on from him, but the guy who is two years away from free agency has good value. The CEO of Chicago therefore did not want to let him leave for peanuts.
Prospects Drew Thorpe (acquired from the Yankees for Juan Soto) and Jairo Iriarte will take the opposite path, but they will not be alone. They are the #5 and #8 prospects on the California roster, according to MLB.
Or at least they were this morning.
Outfielder Samuel Zavala, the club’s former #7 prospect, is also in the mix. Steven Wilson, who is a pitcher, completes the trade, which does not include any of the club’s top four prospects.
However, these days, we suspected that the issue was becoming more and more controversial. The Yankees and the Rangers notably had their noses right in the heart of the matter, but they failed. The Giants were also in the mix.
Replacing Gerrit Cole will therefore not become easier.
Despite a tougher 2023 season, Cease was attractive due to the fact that he only cost eight million dollars this season. For the Padres, a budget club with a boss who is not afraid to give hope, it’s perfect.
I didn’t expect to see Cease accompany the Padres to Korea for the start of the season: he’s not ready for that and the club already has its two starters for that game, anyway. That said, he will join his teammates in Asia.
Does this change your predictions for next season? Me, not so much, honestly… although Yu Darvish, Dylan Cease, Joe Musgrove and Michael King, it’s a nice rotation base.
In the end, it remains a surprise. Will this affect the Padres in the future?
- Jameson Taillon is injured.
- Bowden Francis is in a good position.
“When I was early in pro ball, it would blow up.”
Now, Bowden Francis is in full control. The #5 job is his to run with and the #BlueJays think he can be ever better than that. More in today’s notebook:https://t.co/kVp5v9DHZe

- Aroldis Chapman: it was indeed his mother in the video.
Chapman (2 of 2) … My own $0.02 is that it still comes across as very weird. Cultural differences or not, tough for anybody online or anywhere to make that connection. https://t.co/01lyNmo71A

- Gerrit Cole doesn’t talk much these days. We can obviously understand it.
