This Sunday, March 10, the Rouge et Or of Laval University won the final against the Queens of Queen’s University and was able to lift the trophy of the Canadian Men’s Basketball Championshipthe 8 Ultimate.

This tournament was hosted for the first time in Quebec, at the Peps of Laval University, and welcomed the seven dominant teams of the Canadian provincial league: the Vikes of the University of Victoria, the Dalhouse Tigers of Dalhousie University, the Brock Badgers from Brock University, the Queens from Queen’s University, the Citadins from UQAM and the Gee-Gees from the University of Ottawa.
By being the hosts of this championship, the Rouge et Or of Laval University receives a place in this tournament, thus raising the number of teams to 8, hence the name Championships on the 8th Ultimate.
Although unexpected, the Rouge et Or were able to find their way to victory by overthrowing the Vikes in the quarter-final on Friday March 8 by a score of 75-69, then winning in the semi-final. Saturday against the Dalhouse Tigers (85-74) which gave them a place in the final taking place on Sunday March 10. A present and energetic crowd was able to witness the conclusive efforts of the Rouge et Or who dominated the Queens in the final by winning 77-71. Thus, the Laval residents are crowned great Canadian champions, at home in front of their spectators.
How did the Rouge et Or do it?
But, without having been selected among the seven best teams in Canada, how did the Rouge et Or manage to win this championship against these teams?
First, the meticulous and strategic work of kinesiologists and physiotherapists on each player played a fundamental role in the physical preparation of this team. Then, by thus having a host card, and not a guest, within the tournament, the Rouge et Or team felt that it had nothing to lose and was able to demonstrate a decisive boldness of play in each of their matches.
Finally, the impressive and heavy support of the spectators allowed the Laval University players to maintain their determination to win, which led them to victory. Through this tournament, the Rouge et Or basketball team demonstrated the value of unity within the team as well as its perseverance.
