Rising Star: Nouri Günther Takes Judo World by Storm

uncle. Every month the sports editorial team of the Generalanzeiger Bonn presents its readers with five athletes to choose from. The selected athletes are characterized by an outstanding sporting result that they achieved in the respective month.

The judoka Nouri Günther, who competes for the SSF-Bonn in the 2nd Bundesliga and has been doing judo since he was 5 years old, won the West German individual championship in the U21 -73kg age group in February. At the German Individual Championships in Frankfurt/Oder he narrowly missed out on a medal in fifth place and won the silver medal at the Federal Open Competition in Straussberg.

The Bonn judoka has lived in Unkel-Scheuren since he was born and travels three times a week to the Sportpark Nord for home training and twice to the Olympic base in Cologne. The 18-year-old Unkeler has been a member of the NRW squad and the SSF-Bonn perspective team for years. His goal is to make the national team.

Nouri, who grew up bilingually, completed his high school diploma and the French Baccalauréat at the FEG in Bonn. He is currently in the process of applying to the police and getting his driving license. A workload of nine tournaments in eleven weeks is normal for the judoka. Next weekend is tournament number 10 this year. Nouri starts at the Bremen Masters, a top-class international tournament followed by a training camp. After the course in Bremen, the NRW squad will go to another course in Hanover.

At Easter he will be looking for Easter eggs in Unkel’s garden at home again!
