Rimini-Sestri Levante: dreaming while waiting to take stock

Yet another midweek round of the Serie C championship. B pits the home team against Sestri Levante for the first time in an official match in Rimini. The Ligurian team born way back in 1919, however, has very few professional championships behind it. History tells us of an exploit in Serie C between 1945 and 1949 and then mainly in many amateur championships. Only last year, by winning their Serie D group, the “Corsari” finally landed in a championship full of charm, important stadiums, fans and emblazoned squares like the current third series, quite different from that of the immediate post-war period especially in terms of organized support.

The big unresolved issue remains that of the facility named after “Giuseppe Sivori”, declared not up to standard due to its very limited capacity (around 1,500 spectators) and to many other problems linked to the safety standards required by the Lega Pro. For this reason the the rossoblù team was forced to play the first part of its season in Carrara, and then subsequently made an agreement for/with Vercelli, thus avoiding the risk of playing behind closed doors. This has certainly negatively influenced all the enthusiasm that the fans had in tackling this new adventure and playing first 70 km and now even 180 km from Sestri has certainly contributed to squandering the great potential for numerical and qualitative growth that could derive from from actually playing C at home. All that remains is to wait for the end of the season to take stock and understand how much positive can be drawn from these sacrifices, which inevitably depends on the responses that will arrive off the pitch, given that both the team and the fans are on the pitch they are doing their duty more than admirably.

Coming precisely to the most trivial footballing issues, Sestri currently finds itself in the middle of the zone playout, still fully in the running for direct salvation, a goal which for a newly promoted team would be a great result. Rimini are slightly better off as they have a reassuring margin of safety from the hot zone and are only one point away playoffbut also in a period of the season in which he struggled to find victory even with more modest teams.

In the stands, from the Ligurian city, there are about fifteen visiting fans including a little boy who was certainly away with his father, who however deserves the credit for not wanting to miss the match of his favorite team despite the weekday and the sleep debt with which he will have to show up at school the next day, perhaps tired from the trip but certainly euphoric at being able to tell his classmates that he saw Sestri Levante win on the Rimini pitch.

Being a new fan base for me, I have no room for comparison, I can only say that they still did their part over the course of the ninety minutes, rewarded by the already mentioned positive result on the pitch. Even their presence, gathered behind the banners of Fedayn, Fifth step, Piss e Best group can be considered equally positive: they support and sing their team with generosity while, among the news, they are worth mentioning for the “Benvenuto Nina” banner, left hanging on the balustrade for the entire match.

The home team, as mentioned, is unable to impose its game and after Arezzo and Pineto, has to succumb for the umpteenth time in the presence of a newly promoted team from D. Despite the bad evening on the pitch, the Curva Est he doesn’t give up and tries to maintain the good levels of support and color that he always knows how to offer. Chromatically beautiful peaks with the use of the new flags waved continuously, with a discreet display in the second half and finally with the display of one
banner of closeness to the Teramo fans, hit by numerous warnings after the last derby: despite the rivalry with the Abruzzo fans, there are common values whose defense is both a necessary act and, at the same time, a proof of great maturity.

At the final whistle the joy is therefore all for the visiting players who share it with their fans for three important points which give a completely different perspective to the standings and the rest of the season. Even the red and white footballers come under the East from which, although the atmosphere is obviously not festive, only encouragement arrives not to give up in this crucial moment. Rowing in the same direction was the way in which we brilliantly emerged from a disastrous start to the championship and could be the way to end it in the best possible way, perhaps achieving a place in the playoffs which is still within reach.
