Rik De Mil Bounces Back: From Westerlo to Sporting Charleroi

Rik De Mil was fired at Westerlo. A few days later, however, he had already secured a new job at Sporting Charleroi.

Rik De Mil was the big victim of the salon draw between Westerlo and KRC Genk. He was summarily dismissed, but a few days later he signed a two-season contract with Sporting Charleroi.

Making that choice is not an easy task, Franky Van Der Elst said in Het Nieuwsblad. “I’m happy for him that he sees this mentally,” he said.

The analyst himself would not like to immediately start working for another club and certainly not in the same competition, although De Mil has only just started as head coach and that may factor into his decision.

“I would refrain from doing something like that and think, well, just leave me alone for a while. But he is at the start of his career, so I understand that you want to seize that opportunity immediately. Otherwise he would have had to wait and see: ‘Do I still have a team next year?’”

The fact that Charleroi hires him is also a clear signal of how they feel about De Mil’s dismissal. “They won’t push it too hard,” Van Der Elst continues.

Although it is also a task that should not be underestimated to keep Charleroi in the first class after all the blows they had to deal with.

“A big difference with KV Kortrijk, which is in the winning mood the most, no matter how strange that sounds for a team at the bottom. But Charleroi has five points ahead. I think we should be able to stay in it, and then De Mil will still remain in the Jupiler Pro League.”
