NFL Players’ Union Opposes Proposal to Ban Hip-Drop Tackle: Calls for Rule Reconsideration

The union of NFL players (NFLPA, for its acronym in English) announced this Wednesday that opposes league Competition Committee’s proposal to ban hip-drop tackleor blocks on the player’s hip.

“The players oppose any attempt by the NFL to implement a rule prohibiting the hip-drop tackle. We call on the NFL to reconsider the implementation of this rule.”was the statement from the NFLPA in a publication on its official X account.

Earlier, the Committee issued a statement in which it reported on its proposal to prohibit the action due to the number of injuries it has generated in recent games.

The CEO of the NFL, Jeff Millerassured that this play increases the risk of injuries 25 times more than in a “normal” tackle.

The takedown called ‘hip-drop’ is a tackle in which the defensive player throws himself from behind, over the opponent’s hip, which causes the offensive player’s knees or ankles to become trapped when brought down.

Among the players who were hurt by this play, names like that of Geno Smithstar quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks; Tyreek Hillreceiver Miami Dolphinsy Mark Andrewstight end Baltimore Ravens.

The NFLPA’s argument for this play not being prohibited is the confusion that it will generate among the players if the modification is approved.

“While the NFLPA remains committed to improving our game with health and safety in mind, We cannot support a rule change that creates confusion to us as players, coaches, officials and, especially, to the fans,” they declared.

The Competition Committee’s intention is that the ‘hip-drop’ be considered illegal, so If the proposal is approved, the player who practices the maneuver will receive a 15-yard penalty; the opponent will get an automatic first down.

This proposal will be put to a vote at the NFL annual meeting to be held from March 24 to 27. To be accepted, it requires the vote of at least 24 of the league’s 32 franchise owners.

Among the other proposals of the Competition Committee, there is the modification to the play of the ‘kickoff‘ qthat aims to reduce concussion rates caused by constant clashes between players. The proposal recommends moving the location of equipment to minimize high-speed collisions.
