Remembering Fabrizio Messerini: The Pioneer of Livorno Baseball

Tuesday 26 March 2024 — 8.55pm

He was one of the pioneers of the Livorno bat and run movement, with him baseball in Livorno built its foundations between the 70s and 80s. His last farewell will be given on Wednesday 27th at 3pm at the mortuary in Viale Alfieri. From there he made the final journey to the Wolves cemetery. Towards the final home run

He made the history of baseball in Livorno, on that non-pitch in Via dei Pensieri when a lot of passion and imagination were needed and this sport, so strange and so fascinating at the same time, was the stuff of aliens. He, Fabrizio Messerinifor all the friends of the beat and run labronico “Notches”was one of the first “aliens” who populated this sport, giving life to a historic movement that over the years has made this sport great.
He was one of the children of “Korea” together with the immense Otello Cavallini and to the others who, like him, made Livorno Baseball great: the free-range Riccardo La Rosato what would become one of the best pitching coaches of the Tuscan movement, Marcello Manuli and to the whole “gang” with Mauro Belfiore, Renato Dall’Asta, Lorenzo Martini, Steve Wheeler, Stefano Secchi, Fabrizio Di Petrantonio, Alessandro Piacentini and many many others who in those years between the 70’s and the 80’s all on the road they built the foundations of the Great Game here in Livorno.
The “Tacche” was not a player, he was an entity, a guiding spirit, a model of life and philosophy of baseball. On the mound with that out-of-focus loading and that fluttering ball that never arrived he gave many hitters a hard time. But even as a shortstop he knew his stuff. Enough to teach the technique and the “role” to his nephew Daniele Paoletti.
His number 2, the historic number 2 of Baseball Livorno, was retired not long ago by the company and placed in Hall of Fame of amaranth baseball together with Lorenzo Martini’s 23 and Otello Cavallini’s 3. When we talk about Fabrizio “Tacche” Messerini therefore, we are talking about a real milestone of this sport in the city. Memories chase each other on that ramshackle bus, in those dusty fields when the beautiful red earth diamonds were still only in “Amerighan” films. The clean face of a complicated but pure sport, imported from the rules of baseball but ultimately so accessible to everyone, popular par excellence. A ball and a stick. And a great desire to dream. Because baseball, especially in those years of Tacche, was especially a dream. And imagination. It was a desire to escape. It was getting dirty with a stars and stripes idea by putting on the clothes of a worker during the day. It was the sandwich eaten out of the “peasant” on Sundays all together, it was Otello’s home run which arrived punctually like mass at 12, it was “open the windows Aunt Rosi”, it was the submarine of Tacche who made all the hitters twist around themselves.
“The Livorno Baseball family – we read in a press note issued by the company which we thank for the photo and availability – learned this morning of the passing of one of the giants of amaranth baseball. After a long illness, Fabrizio Messerini, the immense number 2 retired by the historic president Alfredo Sisi during the big party held at the historic Chucheba in Castiglioncello, he left us. The management, the technical staff and the athletes gather together Daniela and to the entire Messerini family in this moment of pain.”
His last farewell will be given on Wednesday 27th at 3pm at the mortuary in Viale Alfieri. From there the moves for the last journey towards the Wolves cemetery. Towards the final home run. Towards that cornfield ready to welcome the amaranth baseball pioneer.
