Reale Mutua Torino returns to winning ways, showing its character on its home parquet: at the Pala Gianni Asti, coach Ciani’s team prevailed against a talented team like Trieste in a high-scoring, high-paced match, with the final result of 103-91. In a match with several absences on both rosters – with Kennedy unavailable for Turin and Trieste without Reyes and Vildera – Turin wins two important points which are worth the temporary second place in the Green Group, awaiting Cantù who will face Verona on Monday. On the shields Luca Vencato (24 points) and Federico Poser (23).

The starting quintet on the pitch: Vencato, Pepe, De Vico, Thomas and Poser leave for Turin; for Trieste, Ruzzier, Brooks, Ferrero, Deangeli and Candussi.

Reale Mutua started well with an inspired Pepe, who immediately made two triples to accompany his team in the first set of 11-4. Trieste, however, reacts and immediately closes the gap with Candussi and Brooks (15-13 after 5 minutes). The pace is very high, the two teams’ possessions increase, Torino is particularly productive in attack but the guests respond blow for blow. Poser converts a three-point play for 24-20, Brooks however in the last minute scores a personal break of 5-0 and Torino closes the first quarter down by one point: 24-25.

The pace and percentages drop in the second half, with the match continuing on a balanced path (30-32 at 15′). Coach Ciani decides to call timeout to shake up his team and the inertia of the match. The yellow-blues return to the pitch well, with Cusin making his presence felt in the paint on both halves of the pitch, Vencato and De Vico attacking in transition and putting Torino back ahead (39-37 3 minutes before the long break). Coach Christian calls a timeout but Reale Mutua remains focused and continues to press the accelerator, closing the first half of the match with a six-point advantage: 52-46 at the long break.

At the start of the third quarter, Trieste immediately tries to mend the gap with Brooks who continues to hit from the arc (59-58 at 24′). Torino fails to find the same offensive fluidity as in the first half of the match and Trieste pushes ahead with a triple from Filloy (61-63). Pepe tries to shake up the yellow-blue attack by scoring a bomb from him and Schina attacks the paint hard, but on the other side there is Deangeli’s response with a three-point play. Vencato comes into his own and puts his team ahead again at the end of the third quarter: 75-71.

The last quarter opens with a series of triples on both sides: Trieste strikes with Bossi and Brooks, Turin responds with De Vico and Pepe. Schina continues to attack the rim with ferocity and forces Trieste to the bonus with still six minutes left in the match. Thomas is the author of two important plays in attack, Cusin protects the rim in his half of the field and Vencato on the line makes it +10 for Torino with just under five minutes to go (90-80). Torino brought the inertia totally on its side with a series of plays of pure character which then resulted in an extension to the maximum advantage (97-82 with 3′ to go). This is the decisive extension: Torino manages and brings home the result. Victory 103-91.

Coach Ciani in the post-match conference: “Both teams played the offensive phase better than the defensive one, as demonstrated by the result. There were five-six minutes of change of gear in the defensive phase on our part which were decisive in creating the gap with Trieste. We managed to score over 50 points in the two halves, but we conceded too many rebounds in attack and we need to work on this aspect. We won a match against a talented team, who know how to play at a high pace, they were without Reyes and Vildera so they too were in difficulty. I’m happy with the fact that, despite the absence of an important attacking midfielder like Kennedy, we managed to maintain a good offensive performance throughout the match.”
