RB Leipzig’s Baumgartner Scores Fastest Goal in Austria’s History in Win Against Slovakia

RB Leipzig midfielder Christoph Baumgartner scored the fastest goal in Austria’s international history in Austria’s 2-0 friendly win against Slovakia on Saturday.

Baumgartner ran from the kick-off towards the opponent’s goal, let several Slovakians get out beautifully and then scored flat from around 20 meters to give Austria a 1-0 lead.

At the time of the goal, just under seven seconds had been played. The Austrian national team has never scored a faster goal.

It has not yet been officially confirmed whether Baumgartner’s feat is the fastest goal in international match history.

According to ORF, that’s how it should be. Accordingly, the record for the fastest international goal to date was held by Christian Benteke, who needed 8.1 seconds to score against Gibraltar in 2016.

Baumgartner’s goal laid the foundation for Austria’s 2-0 success against the Slovaks, who also qualified for the European Championships. In the 82nd minute, Andreas Weimann from West Bromwich made the final score.

The next test match for Austria is on Tuesday: Baumgartner and Co. will face Turkey in Vienna.

Shortly before the European Championships, the Austrians will fine-tune themselves in tests against Serbia and Switzerland before the first group game on June 17th against France gets serious. Other group opponents are the Netherlands and a playoff winner (Poland or Wales), which will be finalized on Tuesday.
