Rally of Santa Brígida: Yeray Lemes and Rogelio Peñate reign on Saturday night – The Province

Lanzaroteno pilot Yeray Lemes and his Grancanario co-pilot Rogelio Peñate take part as leaders in the decisive day, which takes place this Saturday, the 40th edition of the Villa de Rally Saint Brigidinaugural event of the Canary Islands Rally Championship and the Las Palmas Provincial Championship. Those of the Citroën C3 Rally2 set the best time in the only special stage held on Friday night, given that the first scheduled special was suspended due to the accident suffered by the number one team, formed by Miguel Ángel Suárez and Eduardo González, with another Citroën C3 Rally2.

Lemes and Peñate, after running the six kilometers of the stretch, stopped the time in 3:4 They took a 2.6-second lead over Enrique Cruz and Yeray Mujica. The formation of the DISA Copi Sport, with Ford Fiesta Rally2, signed a record of 3:52.3.

Lemes declared that he was fully adapting “after the inactivity” and expressed “a lot of encouragement” to Miguel Ángel Suárez and Eduardo González, “for the misfortune suffered” at the start of the competition. Enrique Cruz also joined in supporting the Palmero pilot.

Luis Monzón and José Carlos Déniz resumed the competition after a long inactivity. They left the Skoda Fabia Rally2 to return to the Citroën C3 Rally2. The Satauta native took third place, 5.4 seconds behind the leader, with a time of 3:55.1. «The start in the section was not good and the brakes were very damaged, so I am not happy with the time achieved», declared the two-time Spanish Rally Champion upon reaching the finish line of the night stage of the Santa Brígida.

Miguel Ángel Suárez, out

The palmero Miguel Ángel Suárez and his co-driver Eduardo González in the Citroën C3 Rally2, current champions of the Canary Islands, took the start with number one. They had a bad start to the season as they suffered a road exit in the Marzagan area, seriously damaging their cars. This forced the organization -Club DGJ Sport- to suspend the celebration of the stage because the vehicle was obstructing the passage of the rest of the participants, as the incident was in a narrow area.

Sergio Fuentes from Tenerife and Ariday Bonilla from Lanzarote, with Citroën C3 Rally2, were in fourth place, 8.0 seconds behind the race leader and 2.6 seconds behind Monzón and Déniz. The provisional fifth place went to the local team made up of Samuel Marrero and Víctor Déniz with Peugeot 208 Rally4 (17.5 seconds behind). Alberto Monzón and Aday Suárez, with the 2007 Porsche 911-997 GT3 Rally Cup, placed sixth, 19 seconds behind. Very close (1.5 seconds away), in seventh place, was Lanzarote’s Aníbal Machín, co-driven by María Hernández in Peugeot 208 Rally4 (4:10.3).

The first ten places were completed by Manuel Mesa and Néstor Gómez (Suzuki Swift), eighth at 23.3 seconds; Antonio Estalella and Antonio Juan Peña, (Toyota GR Yaris), ninth at 29.8; Álvaro Caballero and Noé González (BMW Me E46), tenths at 32.4.

The timed stages that will be held this Saturday in the first part of the final day of the Santa Brígida Rally are these: San Mateo-Tenteniguada-Valsequillo, 10.4 kilometers (10:05 and 1:10 p.m.); San Roque-La Gavia-La Atalaya, 12.07 kilometers (10:35 and 1:40 p.m.); and Los Silos-Pino Santo, 8.2 kilometers (11:05 and 2:10 p.m.). The test closes with the Higuera Canaria-La Atalaya specials, 7.7 kilometers (16.40 hours), La Atalaya-San Mateo, 5.1 kilometers (17.10 hours) and Los Silos-Pino Santo-Villa de Santa Brígida, 8.2 kilometers ( 5:35 p.m.).
