Madrid. Racism persists on the fields of Europe even when there are acts of conscience. In Italy, Napoli players protested against these discriminatory acts based on skin color, while in Spain racist and xenophobic chants resounded again.

The match won 1-0 by Sevilla at Getafe’s field was interrupted by racial insults hurled by the local fans at the Andalusians’ Argentine defender Marcos Acuña.

The shouts coming from the stands with the phrases Acuña mono and Acuña you come as a monkey caused referee Jorge Iglesias to implement the protocol against acts of discrimination and stop the match at minute 68 to reactivate it two later.

Acuña, world champion with Argentina in Qatar 2022, is not of African descent; However, Getafe fans launched racist insults because of his Latin American origin.

The defender was not the only one attacked, as Sevilla coach Quique Sánchez Flores lamented that he also received insults for his gypsy ancestry.

I don’t want them to use gypsy as a racist insult. It seems aberrant to me. Some people think they can say anything in stadiums. We come to work and we should be respected, she said after the game.

In the Third Division of Spain, another episode of racism was recorded yesterday in the duel between Sestao and Rayo Majadahonda, which had to be suspended at minute 87.

Rayo Majadahonda’s Senegalese goalkeeper, Cheikh Sarr, was sent off after jumping into the stands in search of a fan who was insulting him. His teammates from the Madrid team left the field of play and the referee stopped the match.

Both cases come just a few days after Spain and Brazil played a friendly match against cases of racism and in support of Real Madrid player Vinicius Jr, who has received insults in several games.

In contrast to what happened in Spanish football, in Italy there was an act of conscience. The Napoli players knelt before the match against Atalanta in support of their teammate Juan Jesús.

The protest was a response after a sports tribunal determined that Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi will not be sanctioned for allegedly uttering a racist insult against Juan Jesús in a previous duel.

Barcelona wins

In sports, Barcelona won 1-0 over Las Palmas, which was left with 10 men on the field. Raphinha scored the only goal to keep the Blaugranas in the fight for the leadership of Spain.

AC Milan sealed a fourth consecutive victory in the Italian Serie A by defeating Fiorentina 2-0, provisionally reducing their deficit to the leader, Inter Milan, to 11 points. Lazio beat Juventus Turin 1-0, which has not found stability in recent days.
