Press conference of the General Assembly of the European Paralympic Committee / Article

The purpose of the assembly, organized at the initiative of the Latvian Paralympic Committee (LPK), was to oppose the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the Paris Paralympic Games. LPK sought to gain support in the assembly for Latvia’s proposal to sign an agreement on a common European position and readiness to boycott the Paris Games if Russia and Belarus participate in them.

EPK has 54 members, including 46 countries and eight sports organizations. Turkey, Bulgaria and Armenia did not apply for membership in the assembly. At the last moment, the representatives of Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Cyprus refused to go to Riga, citing the lack of security in Latvia, in their opinion, and took part in the work of the assembly remotely.

There is a special emphasis on efforts to prevent aggressor countries from participating in the Paralympic Games because Russia has announced its readiness to include in the delegation persons who fought in Ukraine.

CONTEXT:

In November 2022, the International Paralympic Committee indefinitely suspended the membership of Russia and Belarus in the organization due to their inability to fulfill the requirements stipulated in the statutes. On the other hand, at the end of September 2023, SPK members with a majority of votes supported the partial disqualification of the Paralympic Committees of Russia and Belarus, which in practice means the opportunity for athletes from both aggressor countries to compete as neutral participants.

The Paris Paralympic Games in 2024 will take place from August 28 to September 8.
