Rik De Mil is no longer coach of Westerlo. The club took the six minutes of extra time in which no football was played very seriously.
Peter Vandenbempt was present in Het Kuipje on Sunday when the salon draw took place. At first he didn’t know what he was seeing, but after the match he talked to both trainers.
“I didn’t expect him to be fired today,” Vandenbempt told Sporza about the consequences of the match between Westerlo and KRC Genk. “But I had heard yesterday that the Turkish bosses were considering that. They were extremely indignant.”
It was already heard on Monday that the club, after sending a statement to the world, wanted to cover itself. The dismissal would be an even stronger signal in that direction. “I can deny that Westerlo is doing all this to avoid a punishment from the federal public prosecutor’s office,” Vandenbempt continues.
Very heavy sanction for De Mil
Yet Vandenbempt has mixed feelings about this dismissal. “A lot of people in professional football don’t understand why we get so excited about it. They think that is normal. But whether it should have been the dismissal of Rik De Mil is something else. I think it is a very harsh punishment for De Mil.”
According to Vandenbempt, the club had other options, but opted for a very drastic measure. In any case, it will not be easy for De Mil to find a new job as a trainer. This will certainly haunt him for a long time.
