Paula Badosa’s Quick Comeback: Set to Return to Action in Indian Wells Just 15 Days After Injury Abandonment

Paula Badosa could return to activity sooner than expected, just 15 days after having to abandon, in tears, her first round match in Dubai against the Swiss Lulu Sun. The spinal injury that she has been suffering from for months in her lower back prevented her from closing that meeting and she will try to compete again next week in Indian Wells.

The American WTA 1,000 has granted her one of its invitations in deference to her status as champion of the tournament in 2021. Venus Williams, who will play at 43 years old, and Caroline Wozniacki, winner in 2011, had already received wild cards some time ago and on Friday the rest were made known. In addition to the Spanish, they were received by Emma Raducanu, winner of the US Open three seasons ago; Karolina Pliskova, former world number one and finalist in two Grand Slams, and the Americans Amanda Anisimova, Ashlyn Krueger and McCartney Kessler. In the preview, guests Liv Hovde, Robin Montgomery, Iva Jovic, Haley Giavara, Clervie Ngounoue and Christasha McNeill enter.

Badosa, 72nd in the ranking, is on the list of participants in the WTA 500 in Charleston (April 1 to 7), in the clay season, but will give herself an opportunity in the last section of the American hard court, because that of Begur does not give up. A few days ago she hinted at it in messages she published. “I want to thank all the people who have been sending me messages of support at this very difficult time for me. It is being a long process, but what I am sure of is that I am not going to give up,” she wrote on Twitter. “Use your smile to change the world, don’t let this world change your smile,” she commented on Instagram.

Nakashima and Fognini, among the winners

In the men’s draw, which will feature, among others, Rafa Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, the tournament has invited Brandon Nakashima, Fabio Fognini, Jakub Mensik, Patrick Kypson and Aleksander Kovacevic. And for the preview, to Lucas Pouille, Steve Johnson, Stefan Dostanic, Ethan Quinn and Cooper Woestendick. The women’s qualy begins this Sunday and the men’s qualy begins on Monday, the day on which the individual main draws will be drawn, starting at 00:00, Spanish time.
