Paris 2024 Olympic Games: operated on, Olympic diving champion Matty Lee will not defend his title

At 26, the Briton has given up on the Paris Olympic Games and a potential double. In 2021, Matty Lee won gold in Tokyo, in the 10m synchronized diving, alongside his compatriot Tom Daley. Having undergone spinal surgery, he announced this Wednesday his absence from France next summer.

“A week ago, I underwent a discectomy of the L5/S1 disc in my spine,” explained the Olympic champion. My surgeon told me that the situation would not have improved on its own and therefore the operation was the right decision. »

The operation went well and the Briton feels good, even if he admits to having taken painkillers to calm the pain. Matty Lee obviously regretted being forced to give up the Paris Olympic Games, but the operation had become inevitable.

“The reason I look so happy in the hospital is because I no longer suffer from chronic pain, we found a solution, and I have something to work on. This season has been very difficult so far. In a way, it was torture, but it also forced me to take care of myself and that’s what’s important. »
