Belgium’s Defense Struggles in Match Against England

The Red Devils had a good match against England this Tuesday (2-2). Even if everything was not perfect, especially in terms of defense.

If Belgium showed itself to be dangerous several times in the offensive phases, it again did not reassure in defense. In addition to the goal conceded at the last second, the Belgians conceded a penalty in the first period following an intervention by Jan Vertonghen.

Taken behind his back by Ivan Toneythe veteran of the national team and RSC Anderlecht told the referee that his tackle was not at fault, but this led to the penalty which England converted to 1-1.

Defense, the great weakness of the Red Devils

In his column delivered to Sudinfo, Philip Albert sees this as a priority work area. “Toney was going to look for Vertonghen’s back. All our opponents will,” he explains.

“When we see the offensive quality of the English with The foot et Bowenwho were both monstrous, and guys like Bellingham and Toney, we knew we were going to suffer. It’s normal to suffer like that at Wembley because England will be one of the favorites for the next Euro.”

“But we have to tell ourselves that from the round of 16 onwards, all the opponents will be of the caliber of England. And that they will know that our defense is our weakness. We saw clearly that Toney was always going to look for depth behind Vertonghen’s back. It’s not a coincidence. All our opponents will do the same thing. This is in no way a criticism of our record selection holder. But his age is there. We also saw that ‘with a will-o’-the-wisp like Bowenwe also suffer from the side of Theate.”
