Old Stars: A New Chapter for Hart op Dreef Roden

After 42 years, Hart op Dreef Roden continues under the name Old Stars. This means that the sports club that was once founded for rehabilitating heart patients is entering a new phase.

It started in 1982 with an advertisement in the local Leekster Courant. Jan Scheepstra – then 41 years old – had had a heart attack and wanted to exercise with fellow sufferers to maintain his body. “Seven people showed up,” he says. “Later we had forty.”

At the time, heart patients were rejected much more quickly. The majority ended up at home, although Jan was an exception. “I worked until I was 62,” he says. Weekly exercise has helped him with this, he thinks. “I still feel the same as I did back then, although I have of course grown a day older. But I can’t complain, and that’s only because of the exercise. That’s what the doctor says too!”

84-year-old Theo Troe has been with Hart op Dreef for years and manages the association’s treasury. Now that heart patients are no longer simply rejected for work, the number of members is declining. “That’s why we took a different path two years ago. Anyone over the age of sixty can contact us. Whether you are recovering from knee surgery or just want to exercise.”
